Surgical Simulation

This highly interactive medical training system for minimally invasive surgery is based on computer graphics and virtual reality techniques(VR).

It offers an alternative to conventional training methods such as plastic models and "learning-by-doing".

Image algorithms and visualisation techniques are used to create the virtual environment; a realistic 3D representation of the anatomic situs is derived from 2D medical image data.

The VR interface of the training simulators consist of two main components: 3D interaction to guide the surgical instruments and 2D user interface for the visual feedback and control of the training session.

Thus an intuitive handling of the instruments is guaranteed and the surgeon is able to perform endoscopic techniques on the virtual situs before facing a real patient.
